RELEVANCE TO FORNEBU!:
Ørestad provides a relevant comparison to Fornebu as a new urban district where landmark architecture has been used to generate identity and attractivity. Projects by BIG and other prominent architects have given Ørestad a strong architectural profile, raising the question of whether individual signal buildings can act as catalysts for wider urban development. In comparison, Telenor has played a similar anchoring role at Fornebu. The visit provides an opportunity to examine whether such flagship projects generate lasting urban qualities and activity—or primarily create isolated destinations within the larger district.DAC TOUR INFO:

Discover how these contemporary buildings reflect Denmark’s cultural values to design with nature and share common spaces. Our DAC guides share the design stories behind this remarkable collection of new residential buildings, daycare centers, schools, and an arena – with more under construction.Here you’ll learn about the future of sustainable buildings that creatively recycle and upcycle materials. We’ll also see BIG’s innovative 8 House – surprisingly built within sight of beautiful fields of grazing cows – which claimed the prize for Housing Building of the Year by the World Architecture Festival.
Our tour begins outside Ørestad Metro Station, at Kay Fiskers Plads. From there we’ll walk south, exploring the highlights of Ørestad. Practical info:

DATE: 2015AMBITION: Copenhagen Towers was conceived as a highly sustainable workplace and a landmark for the emerging business district. Rather than treating the tower purely as an object, the large planted atrium creates an internal social environment and pedestrian connection through the complex. Environmental systems and reused materials were integrated as part of the architectural concept.
RECEPTION: The project has been recognised particularly for sustainable commercial architecture and workplace design. Urbanistically, however, it illustrates Ørestad's wider tension between successful individual buildings and the spaces between them. For Fornebu, it raises a familiar question: can a major corporate building act as an anchor for an entire neighbourhood, and does corporate attractiveness translate into wider urban attractiveness?

DATE: Completed 2016, opened 2017AMBITION: Royal Arena was explicitly conceived as more than an event building: it was intended as an urban growth stimulator for Ørestad. The architects attempted to mediate between the enormous scale of an international arena and the scale of the neighbourhood through transparency, an inhabited plinth and smaller public spaces around its perimeter.
RECEPTION: The arena has been successful as a metropolitan destination and has received architectural recognition. Its urban effect is more ambiguous because activity changes dramatically between event and non-event days. It therefore provides a useful test of event-driven placemaking: can a landmark generate everyday urbanity, or primarily periodic intensity?

DATE: 2018AMBITION: Rather than separating the school and sports facilities, the design combines them within a single circular structure. The sports hall forms the social heart of the building and is visible from multiple levels. The circular form also avoids a conventional front and back, allowing the school to address both the emerging neighbourhood and Kalvebod Fælled.
RECEPTION: The project received the 2019 Copenhagen Building Award and has been recognised for combining educational, architectural and community ambitions. Unlike Ørestad's more spectacular landmarks, its attractiveness is generated through everyday civic infrastructure rather than destination architecture.

DATE: 2019AMBITION: Resource Rows was conceived as a full-scale experiment in circular construction. Brick facade sections from demolished buildings were reused directly, alongside waste timber and other reclaimed materials. Rather than hiding sustainability within technical systems, the architects made reuse visible in the physical character of the buildings.
RECEPTION: The project has become an internationally referenced example of circular architecture and received significant professional recognition. Its importance lies less in spectacular form than in demonstrating that material constraints can themselves become generators of architectural identity, environmental performance and market attractiveness.

DATE: 2018AMBITION: Upcycle Studios was designed as a prototype for circular and adaptable housing. Recycled concrete, discarded windows and surplus timber become primary construction materials, while the houses themselves can accommodate different combinations of family life, rental space and workplace over time.
RECEPTION: The project won the 2019 Danish Design Award – Save Resources and has been widely used as a demonstration that circular construction can move from experimental prototypes into commercial housing. It asks whether environmental constraints can become a source of architectural innovation rather than a restriction on design.

DATE: 2010AMBITION: BIG reinterpreted the conventional Copenhagen perimeter block as a three-dimensional neighbourhood. Apartments, townhouses, offices and commercial functions are layered rather than separated, while a continuous path climbs around the building and allows pedestrians and cyclists to move between ground level and upper floors. The project attempts to combine suburban qualities—gardens, townhouses and proximity to landscape—with urban density.
RECEPTION: 8 House became Ørestad's clearest international architectural success, receiving major awards and becoming a destination in its own right. That success also makes it particularly relevant to Fornebu. Can exceptional architecture generate attractiveness for an entire district, or does the success of an individual landmark expose the difference between creating a great building and creating a great piece of city? In this sense, BIG and 8 House in Ørestad can be compared with the anchoring role of Telenor at Fornebu.

DATE: 2002AMBITION: Vestamager demonstrates the infrastructure-led logic underlying Ørestad. The district and its metro were conceived together, concentrating new development along a linear public-transport corridor rather than extending Copenhagen through conventional incremental growth.
RECEPTION: The metro has unquestionably provided Ørestad with strong regional accessibility. The more contested issue is what happens around the stations. Ending the tour here therefore returns to the question raised at Kay Fiskers Plads: how does a new metro line move from being transport infrastructure to becoming an instrument for building a city?

Nordhavn Tour

RELEVANCE FOR FORNEBU!:
Nordhavn is the transformation of Copenhagen’s former industrial harbour into a dense, mixed-use urban district. Rather than prescribing a finished city, the masterplan was conceived as a robust and flexible framework of compact neighbourhoods that can develop incrementally over time. The approach combines the preservation and reuse of industrial structures with new architecture, public waterfronts, cycling and walking infrastructure, mixed functions and metro connectivity.Urban and architectural design are closely connected. Existing structures such as The Silo are treated as resources and anchors for identity, while new public spaces and buildings are intended to create a fine-grained, active neighbourhood rather than an isolated redevelopment project. The broader ambition is a “five-minute city”, where everyday functions are accessible by walking, cycling and public transport.
For Fornebu, Nordhavn raises an interesting question: can a large redevelopment become an ordinary, integrated piece of city rather than remain a distinct development enclave? Nordhavn has received considerable public and professional recognition—DAC describes Copenhageners as having “taken the district to our hearts”—but its continued expansion also means that the model is still being tested. Public dialogue remains part of planning subsequent districts, including the forthcoming Nordsøkvarteret.

Just 15 years ago, the Århusgade neighborhood in Nordhavn was surrounded by fences and checkpoints as it was a part of Copenhagen’s free port. Today, the neighborhood is the city’s foremost example of a modern transformation of a harbor area. And we have taken the district to our hearts.Art studios are moving to Nordhavn, different housing types mix with each other, the location by the water is attractive, and the traces of the old industrial harbor fascinate us. The area has been developed on the basis of a comprehensive plan dating back to 2008, when thinking about social, economic and environmental sustainability was a completely new approach. Today we are starting to see the results.
Good infrastructure, dense city, mixed functions, new meeting places, classic and recycled materials and preservation of existing buildings, supplemented by new ones. Come and let yourself be carried away by silo, sunshine and Sundkaj.

Compact blocks, short distances, mixed functions, cycling and public transport are combined with retained industrial structures and waterfront spaces.
RECEPTION: Nordhavn has generally received substantial professional recognition for its urban strategy, particularly the human scale of Århusgadekvarteret. Nordhavns Plads provides a useful starting point for asking whether the district succeeds in feeling like an extension of Copenhagen rather than a separate development enclave—a central question for the future development of Fornebu.

DATE: Transformation completed during the first major phase of Århusgadekvarteret in the 2010sAMBITION: Kanonhuset demonstrates Nordhavn's strategy of allowing the industrial harbour to remain legible within the new neighbourhood. Rather than clearing the site and starting again, the existing structure is adapted to a new residential function. Its scale, materiality and irregularities become resources for creating identity.
RECEPTION: The approach is characteristic of what has been positively received about the first phase of Nordhavn: new development does not entirely erase what came before. For Fornebu, it raises the question of whether existing buildings and traces of previous uses can become generators of identity rather than obstacles to redevelopment.

RECEPTION: The waterfront has become one of the most heavily used public spaces in Nordhavn, particularly during summer. Its popularity suggests that attractiveness can emerge from ordinary housing + water + active ground floors + high-quality public space, rather than from a single spectacular building.

DATE: 2016AMBITION: Konditaget Lüders challenges the idea that parking infrastructure must be a purely technical object. Instead of hiding the structure, its roof becomes an elevated public space containing running, climbing, training and play facilities. The external stair simultaneously becomes circulation, exercise equipment and an invitation to enter the building.
RECEPTION: The project has received extensive international attention and architectural awards for transforming mundane infrastructure into a neighbourhood amenity. It asks whether necessary infrastructure can perform several functions simultaneously and contribute positively to public life.

DATE: Original silo 1962; transformation completed 2017AMBITION: COBE's approach was to preserve the enormous concrete structure rather than demolish it. The existing silo becomes the structural and historical core, while a new faceted metal facade is wrapped around it. Internally, the unusual dimensions of the industrial structure generate apartments that differ substantially from conventional residential construction.
RECEPTION: The Silo has become one of Nordhavn's most recognisable architectural landmarks and has received significant international recognition. Unlike a completely new icon, however, its identity derives from transforming something already embedded in the site's history. For Fornebu, this raises an alternative to conventional starchitecture: can transformation itself produce a landmark?

DATE: Transformation completed 2017AMBITION: Frihavnstårnet takes a different approach to industrial transformation than The Silo. Rather than treating the original structure as an isolated monument, the former grain silo is incorporated into a new residential composition. New housing and the existing industrial structure remain deliberately distinguishable.
RECEPTION: Seen immediately after The Silo, the two projects illustrate different degrees of preservation, intervention and architectural authorship. Frihavnstårnet demonstrates how industrial structures can become ordinary components of a new residential neighbourhood rather than stand only as monuments to the site's past.

DATE: 2018AMBITION: Orienten introduces an important social dimension into Nordhavn. In an area characterised by high land values and extensive private development, the project was intended to ensure that the emerging district also contained non-market and more affordable housing. Architecturally, the large block is fragmented into smaller expressions to avoid appearing as one monotonous housing complex.
RECEPTION: Its significance is therefore as much urban and political as architectural. Nordhavn's success cannot be evaluated only through attractive waterfronts and expensive apartments; it also raises questions of who can actually live in the new city. DATE: 2017AMBITION: The school was conceived as both an educational environment and a highly visible sustainability demonstration. Its facade consists of approximately 12,000 individually angled solar panels, making energy production part of the architectural expression. Internally, four towers divide a very large institution into smaller educational communities.
RECEPTION: The project has received considerable international attention for integrating renewable-energy technology directly into architecture rather than treating it as an addition. Urbanistically, the school demonstrates the importance of civic and educational anchors in transforming a development area into an actual neighbourhood.
For Fornebu, this may be one of Nordhavn's most relevant lessons: successful redevelopment depends not only on housing, offices and transport, but on the gradual accumulation of schools, public spaces, everyday services and institutions that allow a district to function as a piece of city.

SCALE: Terminus of the M4 Nordhavn branch and part of Copenhagen's wider metro network
VOLUME: Elevated metro station positioned within the former harbour landscape
URBAN SPACE: Major arrival and interchange point connecting the developing outer parts of Nordhavn with central Copenhagen; the elevated infrastructure leaves the ground plane relatively open for pedestrian and urban connections
CONSULTANTS: Arup + COWI + SYSTRA — engineering and metro systems; architectural design developed as part of the Copenhagen Metro programme

DATE: Opened 2020AMBITION: The extension of the M4 to Nordhavn was conceived as an integral part of the district's long-term urban development rather than simply as transport infrastructure added afterwards. Orientkaj establishes high-capacity public transport relatively early in the transformation of the former harbour, allowing subsequent neighbourhoods to develop around an existing metropolitan connection.
RECEPTION: The station represents one of the clearest parallels between Nordhavn and Fornebu. Both raise the question of how a major new metro investment can become a structuring instrument for urban development, influencing density, development sequence, mobility and the location of future neighbourhood centres.
Ending the tour at Orientkaj therefore completes the Nordhavn narrative: from an established inner neighbourhood at Nordhavn Station to infrastructure intended to support the next phases of city building further into the harbour.

The course LAA350 - Projects in Urban Planning is a 20 ECTS course, focusing on the urban development of the city centre in the medium-sized city Sarpsborg. The course encourages studies of structures, massing and in-between spaces. LAA350 was conceived and previously led by professor Elin Børrud, before her departure this year.
