LAA350 RFP

Tin’s lecture RFP – Space, Functions, and Program. Essentially, LAA350 focuses on the early-stage concept phase, moving from initial idea to massing study. This lecture extends beyond that scope, addressing the next phase: breaking down the massing study of a single program (P) into smaller, defined functions (F) and spatial components (R). This step is crucial for bridging the gap between early-stage conceptual design and late-stage construction documentation. The workshop was not held due to scheduling conflicts.

This lecture consists of two parts: a lecture showing examples of how RFP plays out in architectural objects/programs, and how it plays out in urban plots. Very similar to the prior lecture and workshop, Concept, the idea is to identify their overarching idea, and visualise the spatial guidelines on a piece of paper. In the same spirit, the workshop consisted of 4 very simple bulletpoints:

  1. context - copy/paste their midterm review.

  2. problem - copy/paste their midterm review.

  3. overarching idea - copy/paste or revise their midterm review, according to the critique they got the day before.

  4. spatial guidelines - the actual workshop: visualise on tracing paper how their overarching idea plays out on their plot, accordingly to these drawing categories:

    • building type, or the program.

    • RFP, an estimate of how their program, spaces and functions are divided and put together.

    • Massing, or volumes, density of their project and the logic according to program.

    • Urban space, how the massing’s define spaces and its relation to massing.

    • Mobility, how roads, lanes, walkways, elevators, stairwells connects urban spaces and volumes proposed.

The course LAA350 - Projects in Urban Planning is a 20 ECTS course, focusing on the urban development of the city centre in the medium-sized city Kongsvinger. The course encourages studies of structures, massing and in-between spaces. LAA350 was conceived and previously led by professor Elin Børrud, before her departure this year. The teaching staff consist of Anja Standal, the new course responsible (BYREG), and Tin Phan (EIEJUSS)
