Copenhagen Field Trip

LAA350 will be heading to Copenhagen, fresh off the boat... As in literally straight off the cruiseship DFDS - the lower tier of all cruiseships. In Tin’s own words: this is not a study trip, it’s team building! Read more about the trip in our digital itinerary!

Wednesday

DFDS SEAWAYS

    • National ID card

    • Driver’s License.

  • Make sure your bunk buddies/cabin mates are fully checked in and on board with their luggage.

    • Treasure Hunt: scavenger hunt for young adults.

    • Game Room / Casino: classic slot machines, video games.

OPTIONAL PROGRAM

  • An innovation hub in Copenhagen bringing together architects, urban planners, researchers, and businesses to develop sustainable cities. It’s a place for networking on green solutions, technology, and urban quality of life. As a member of a global community, knowledge and ideas are shared that help shape future city development.

NOTE! Tin was too lazy to join.

  • Denmark’s national resource center for design, innovation, and the creative industries. Through exhibitions, projects, and partnerships, they promote sustainability, entrepreneurship, and value creation – with design as the driving force.

  • ADRESS: Hejrevej 8–10, 2400.

    Group dinner, 2 courses.

    • Dinner: a selection of three pizzas.

    • Dessert: tiramisu or ice cream.

    • Drinks: unlimited filtered water and soft drinks for two hours.

Note! Alcoholic drinks are at your own expense. Ordering at the table is not allowed – the restaurant requires one person per table to purchase drinks/pay on behalf of their group to reduce pressure on bartenders and servers.

  • 4 out of 50 guests did not respond to Tin’s canvas announcements or multiple e-mails on which of the two options for dessert (tiramisu or sorbet). The 4 students will by-default get the tiramisu:

    • Andreas Rasmussen Olsen.

    • Elisabeth Sæther.

    • Matz Arthur Ryen Aalerud.

    • Tobias Fagerland.

  • To be continued.

AMAGER ØST
NEIGHBOURHOOD WALK
Konkyliestien 7.

Switch on your analytical mind and understand what type of function the buildings have, how the volumes influence/define/eliminate place, and what kind of urban spaces remain. Some aspects are subjectively charged (what you personally feel and your associations), while others are objectively far too tall according to regulations/sunlight, with limited spatial quality (scarcity, economy, poor materials, lighting, etc.).

    • Type: cabins and garden plots organized in parcels.

    • Volumes: 178 with single-story volumes/homes.

    • Urban space: the beach area with recreation/outdoor life and the residential area with gardening. The area is protected and guaranteed permanent status.

    • Type: rowhouses/“townhouses” in a courtyard.

    • Volumes: detached rows of 6–7 units, freestanding.

    • Urban space: the space is defined by what remains around the rowhouses and the outer block structure.

    • Type: slabs + block, or urban space defined by slab-corner.

    • Volumes: volumes of different heights and forms decisive for the ground floor.

    • Urban space: “square” and front gardens – how do these feel as places to stay?

    • Type: apartment blocks, mixed unit sizes.

    • Volumes: mid-rise clusters in a courtyard.

    • Urban space: irregular with several niches and corners.

  • Item description
  • Development potential?

  • How does this courtyard feel?

    • Type: originally rental housing for people needing affordable apartments in a relatively dense area (moderate income).

    • Volumes: tall “triangular blocks” that cut across the historic perimeter blocks/slabs.

    • Urban space: diagonal street defines atypical triangular courtyards. How does the backyard feel on site?

    • Type: primary school for grades 0–9.

    • Volumes: single volume with smaller units in a sea of perimeter blocks.

    • Urban space: Tin calls it “imploded perimeter block structure” – what do you think this means?

    • Type: residential houses, multifamily homes/small rental blocks, built to provide affordable housing.

    • Volumes: detached villas/houses with both shared and private gardens.

    • Urban space: gardens in an axis – how do these feel?

  • Did not reach destination.

    • Type: functionalist apartments for the upper middle class.

    • Volumes: a simple L, in contrast to the workers’ quarter.

    • Urban space: clear hierarchy in the area, and Bellevue appears as the one big “square” in its neighborhood.

    • Type: sports hall.

    • Volumes: a crystal-shaped, green glass building that weaves into the old perimeter blocks from 1900–1910.

    • Urban space: oriented toward the local community at Amagerbro – especially children, youth, and sports associations, but also residents with an interest in culture and activities.

The course LAA350 - Projects in Urban Planning is a 20 ECTS course, focusing on the urban development of the city centre in the medium-sized city Sarpsborg. The course encourages studies of structures, massing and in-between spaces. LAA350 was conceived and previously led by professor Elin Børrud, before her departure this year. The teaching staff consist of Anja Standal, the new course responsible (BYREG), and Tin Phan (EIEJUSS)
